Lucy goes to daycare Wednesday - Friday (she has other child-care Mon and Tues). When I dropped her off today they had me sign a permission slip for a field trip on Thursday. I signed it and asked her teacher if they would also need me to leave Lucy's carseat, she said no ... I left feeling confused so I called the director and he said the whole center is going to a park/picnic and they are taking a big yellow school bus. He told me how safe it was. I do know statistically that buses are involved in far fewer deaths then car accidents, and that most accidents happen with kids entering and exiting buses. I just think the stats were gathered from normal usage kids ages 5 and up. I couldn't couldn't couldn't send her to daycare tomorrow knowing she'd be all untethered riding down a freeway in a yellow bus, I mean one quick stop ... shoot. I am like the queen of following installation manuals for carseats, took a certification course and everything.
So grandma gets her tonight-tomorrow. Logically I know, just by driving her up there tonight and having her driven back tomorrow I've probably increased the possibility she'll get in a crash ... but she'll be in a carseat!

You're not crazy.
When I was 17 years old, a school bus filled with high schoolers two towns from where I lived stopped on the train tracks and was hit by a train. 7 kids died, and it made national news.
I might be the crazy overprotective mom on this point, but my children will never ride a school bus because of that incident.
I don't care about statistics. It only takes one human error to forever change a whole lot of lives.
I am so with you Stacy. Statistics really don't matter if your child is the one out of however many million.
All of the studies show that carseats exponentially increase your child's odds of surviving an accident. So why is it that vehicles in the business of carrying children do not have them?
I think you are wise to respect your instinct and protect your child. Thankfully there is a (wonderful) grandma you can call on.
I think I am in love with Nancy. I totally agree with my gal Stacy and was glad to take care of my honey girl.

I'm commenting because I am the owner of a child care center here in Florida. We ARE NOT allowed to bring any child (under 4 or 40 lbs - whichever comes LAST) on any feild trip for the very reason you stated. Some children under that age/weight attend local Elementary Schools for various reason and they must have a harness to wear on the buss. Its the law. I would certainly question the school and the decision they're making to place so many very young, small children on a buss without restraints.
